I currently use Firefox as my main browser for surfing the internet, bookmarking sites, and so on. There are occasions, however, when I want to simply hide my bookmarks in Firefox, whether it be from others or just to reduce clutter. There are a couple of ways you can go about doing this, so I’ll try to explain as many as I could find.
The bookmarks toolbar in Firefox is something I only need once in a while! I hate the fact that it takes up so much space and I only use it a couple of times of day. SO wouldn’t it be cool if it could be auto-hidden, kind of like the auto-hide feature for the Windows Taskbar. When you over over that area, the toolbar will re-appear.
Lifehacker wrote up a great article on how to do just that by modifying the Firefox profile, in particular the userchrome.css file. Add a line or two or code and your bookmark toolbar is now hidden!
If editing the userchrome.css file seems like too much trouble or you are not sure how to do it, you can go to userstyles.org and install the auto-hide boomark Firefox add-on that does all the work for you.
Another cool Firefox addon is Menu Editor, which will allow you to hide the Bookmarks menu item. So if you want to hide the Bookmarks toolbar and the Bookmarks menu item, use both of these in conjunction.
And like always, there are usually 10 Firefox add-ons that do the same thing, which is good in my opinion, so you can also check out Smart Bookmarks, which saves space by hiding bookmark names and only showing icons.
Now it’s one thing if you are trying to hide your bookmarks just because you want to save space and another if you don’t want anybody to see which sites you are bookmarking. In the second instance, the above mentioned methods are not secure at all and anyone could easily view your bookmarks if they wanted to.
I’ve never really bothered to hide my bookmarks, but I know of a few methods that you can try out.
1. Use Portable Firefox – Run Portable Firefox off your USB stick and you can save your bookmarks, extensions and passwords with you anywhere without anyone else being able to view them.
Of course if someone gets a hold of your USB stick, they will be able to run it from there, but as long as it’s with you, you are safe from having anyone access your bookmarks, browsing history, etc.
2. Create a separate password protected Firefox profile – You can actually create different profiles in Firefox, each with it’s own set of bookmarks, history, passwords, etc. I’m not going to go into how to create a separate profile in Firefox here, but you can read all about it from the Mozilla website if you are interested in this method.
3. Save bookmarks somewhere else – Sounds stupid, but if you want to hide your bookmarks, why not store them somewhere else. There are lots of secure online bookmark services like KeePass (it’s a password manager, but you can save all your bookmarks there and open the URLs from the program.
You can also use sites like del.icio.us, Spurl, Furl, etc for storing bookmarks separate from Firefox.

People love to chat, especially these days since they can now talk to, hear and see someone who is miles away from you. Nowadays, the most popular chat program is of course the Yahoo messenger. With the ability to create new profiles with Yahoo, wouldn’t it be nice if you could use this program with different IDs concurrently on a single PC? Thankfully, there is a solution. Here are the steps:
First, you will need to access the registry editor to change the properties of the Yahoo Messenger program. To do that you need to click on the start button, go to run and type regedit in the box then press OK. You will then get this page.
From the registry editor locate the HKEY_CURRENT _USER folder and go to the Software folder. Next, you need to look for the Yahoo folder and click on pager. Right click your mouse and click on the DWORD option.
Change the value name to plural and you may choose form numbers one to three for the value number. And click the OK button to save the changes done.
There you may now enjoy a multiple messenger. Enjoy chatting!
People with multiple personality disorder will especially prefer this hack. Users sharing the same computer could also benefit with this tip.

It’s usually a good idea to update the BIOS on your computer for more options and better performance. Updating the BIOS will allow the host operating system (Windows, etc) to fully utilize all of the hardware features of the computer, i.e. hibernate, standby, sleep mode, wake-on-lan, etc.
So how do you go about figuring out if you need to update the BIOS on your computer? Well first you’ll need to figure out the current version of the BIOS. There are a couple of ways to do this.
1. System Information
Click on Start, choose Run and type in winmsd. This will bring up the Windows System information dialog box.
In the System Summary section, you should see an item called BIOS Version/Date. Now you know the current version of your BIOS.
2. BIOS Version in Registry
Just about everything in Windows is stored in the Registry and the version of the BIOS is no exception! Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWAR\EDESCRIPTION\System
And you’ll see several keys related to the BIOS, including SystemBiosDate, SystemBiosVersion, VideoBiosDate, and VideoBiosVersion.
3. Reboot Computer
Another method to determine the BIOS version on your computer is to simply restart the computer! Most computers, including Dell, show you the BIOS version number when the computer first boots up.
You can also usually enter Setup by pressing F12 for Dell computers and check the BIOS version there also. Other computer manufacturers may have a different key to enter setup.
4. Use third party software
If none of the above methods worked for detecting your computers’ BIOS version, you can download and install a third party system information program, like Everest. This free program will give you loads of information about your computer hardware, software, etc including the BIOS version.
That’s it! I can’t think of any other way to find the BIOS on your computer! Now go to your computer manufacturers web site, like support.dell.com, and search for drivers and updates to your particular model. If you see a newer version on the site, simply download it and run the program to update your BIOS! Enjoy!

It’s useful if you have a computer that you are not currently backing up to some sort of external device. And even if you are, it’s useful in case you install a bad Windows driver that causes the computer to crash and burn. Recovering from that is as simple as restoring the system state.
Yet if you want to turn off System Restore because it’s eating up too much space or you simply do not need it, here’s how you would do it.
Right-click on My Computer and go to Properties. This will bring up the System Properties dialog box. You can also go to the Control Panel and click on System.
Next click on the System Restore tab and you’ll see a box at the bottom that shows which drives are being monitored by System Restore. If you want to turn it off completely for all drives, check the box “Turn off System Restore on all drives”.
Click OK and you’re done. If you’re turning it off because you know what you are doing, good for you. However, if you are turning it off just to stop if from taking up hard drive space or because you read it slows down your system, I would suggest you leave it on! It’s come in very handy for me several times!
And if you want it to take up less hard drive space, simple click on the drive letter and then click on Settings.
Currently, my System Restore file is taking up a whopping 5GB’s! That’s way too much and certainly can be reduced. By default, Windows sets the value at 12%, which would be almost 12GB’s on my computer! I would suggest making sure you give System Restore about 2GB of space, so whatever percentage equals 2GB. Enjoy!

You can customize the options to capture in full-size or to have the image scaled down. There is also a Pro version for $15 that lets you copy the picture to the clipboard and let’s you select a region only, rather than the entire page or only the visible portion.
Once it’s installed, a new toolbar item that looks like a camera will appear in the far right. You can capture an image either by clicking on the toolbar menu and choosing the option or by holding down a modifier key and simply pressing the button.
Hold the Alt key and press the camera button to automatically save an image of the visible portion of the page. Hold Shift to get the entire web page. The extension also adds these same commands to the browser context menu, so you can right-click to save an image.
You can customize Page Saver by choosing Page Saver Options from the menu. On the General tab you can set the default behavior for clicking on the button, keyboard shortcuts for your default action, and whether you want sounds or the context menu.
The Image Capture tab lets you customize the parameters you would like to appear in the name of the file. By default, it’s only the name of the file, but you can add in date information also. You can also select the format and choose not to be prompted when saving the file.
A very easy to use, fast, and overall nicely designed extension.
