Now Open Closed TAB in IE7

You may have had this nagging problem while using the Internet Explorer 7. I open countless number of tabs in IE 7, and when I get irked with the cluttering, I close them in a hurry, just to realize I have closed a window I may have reached through like a hundred sites of linking. In firefox it was never a problem, and a simple CNTRL+SHIFT+T would solve it there. But not the case in IE 7. So after determined searching on the world wide web for a solution for this headache in IE 7, voila ...

There are some added features as well to this version of the 'solution' . . . :

  • Added a “Find” feature that searches the title and url of all previously closed tabs and only shows those that contain what you searched for, in the “Quick Tab Style View”.
  • Added a messagebox to verify the clearing of tab history from the toolbar button.
  • Added logging capabilities to help troubleshoot issues (disabled by default).
  • Changed the “More Previously Closed Tabs Available…” to be bold, to stand out on the context menu rather than looking like a website name.
  • Decreased tab closing time due to inefficiency with html document size.
  • Removed straggler message boxes (they now are logged, if enabled).

FREE INTERNET COMING IN USA

According to Reuters report, the goal of FCC is exploring ways to bring free broadband to all Americans.

The father of the plan is FCC Chairman Kevin Martin. He proposes to auction an unused piece of 25 megahertz wireless spectrum. The winning bidder would be allowed to use the spectrum as they see fit, provided that access is free. Winning bidder must keep the network free of pornography.

FCC spokesman Rob Kenny said: "We're hoping there will be increased interest in the proposal; and because this will provide wireless broadband services to more Americans, it is certainly something we want to see,"

"Too rigid" is the term for free access requirement - which use CTIA, a trade group for U.S. wireless carriers, which balked at the proposal.

FCC presided over a similar auction for wireless spectrum in the 700 MHz range earlier this year. That process proved a difficult fight between traditional telecoms and Google. While Verizon Wireless won the bulk of the spectrum, many believe it was Google that won the war.

In the present auction there is no company which emerged as a potential bidder. The winning bidder also would have to build out the system to serve 50 percent of the U.S. population within four years and 95 percent within 10 years. It would have provided FREE service, generating revenue partly through advertising.

Search-within-search by Google

Now,Google is taking a greater role in helping users search within particular sites. The company has introduced a search-within-search feature that lets users stay on Google to find pages on popular sites like those of Wikipedia.NewYork times etc.The search box appears when some one enters the name of certain web addresses or company names-say "best buy"-rather than entering a request like 'cellphones'.
The results of search are almostall individual company..pages.
The problem is that when someone enters a term into that secondary search box,Google will display ads for competing sites, thereby profiting from ads it sells against the brand.Though the feature helps users save step, there are trade-offs for web publishers and retailers. While the service could help increase traffic.

How to format USB drive and memory stick with NTFS

Monday, June 16, 2008

If you have ever tried to format a USB thumb drive or memory stick, you may have noticed that the only options you get are FAT and FAT32 file systems. This is the default behavior in Windows XP. However, with some slight tweaking of settings, you can actually format your removable storage devices in NTFS format, including external hard drives, etc.

Of course, there is a reason why Windows defaults the formatting of removable storage to FAT and FAT32. There are actually a few advantages and disadvantages to formatting a USB drive in NTFS format, so we’ll go through those before actually talking about how to do it.

The advantages of enabling NTFS of removable storage devices are mostly security related. For example, an NTFS file system lets you to add allow and deny permissions on individual files and folders for specific Windows users, something you cannot do in the FAT file system. But that’s not all in terms of security. You can also encrypt files using Windows XP’s built-in encryption.

Other benefits include the ability to compress files and therefore save space on your USB drive. You can also set disk quotas and even create partitions! Formatting USB drives in NTFS has several advantages that would be good if you need to use some of these advanced features, i.e. for your IT department or if you’re just paranoid!

However, there are also a few drawbacks to using NFTS on a USB drive. Firstly, there is a lot more writing to the drive that is required when using NTFS and therefore your access to the device will be slower. Will it make a major difference that would prevent people from using it? Probably not, but it’s something to consider. Also, versions of Windows older than 2000 cannot read NTFS file systems, nor can most Linux systems.

The other major downside is that if you encrypt your files on the USB drive, you will not be able to open them anywhere else. Actually, this can be considered a downside or an upside depending on what you want to do. If you want to secure your USB stick so that only your user account on your one computer can open the files, then encrypting is perfect. If not, then do not encrypt the files.

How to format USB drive with NTFS

First, connect your USB device to your computer. Then right-click on My Computer from the desktop and choose Manage.

manage my computer

Next click on Device Manager and then expand out Disk Drives. You should see your USB drive listed there as “Generic USB 2.0 USB Drive” or something similar.

usb disk drive

Now right-click on the USB drive under Disk Drives and choose Properties. Then go to the Policies tab.

optimize for performance

Now you will see two options, the “Optimize for quick removal” selected by default. Go ahead and change that by selecting the “Optimize for performance” option. This enables writing caching on the drive and therefore allows you to format it as NTFS! Sweet.

That’s it. Now click OK and then go to My Computer. Right click on the drive in My Computer and choose Format. In the File System drop down you will now see the option for NTFS!

file system ntfs

You can now secure your USB flash drive or external USB hard drive in any way you like! Enjoy! Source: PCtipsBox
